International students who wish to study abroad are generally required to submit proof of language proficiency. This is particularly true for international students who have a native language other than English. One of the most popular language proficiency tests is the PTE or the Pearson Test of English. The PTE offers international students many unique advantages. Pearson Test of English offers a wholly immersive and digital experience to students and provides real-world situations, unlike standard tests.

International students are required to write on current affairs, respond to lectures, and talk to a virtual audience. The PTE aims to prepare international students as well as test their English language abilities against actual scenarios that they will be required to face. All questions are in sync with the social and academic expectations that international students are expected to navigate. This modern testing approach, along with quick results and a transparent scoring system, are among the leading reasons why the Pearson Test of English is quickly gaining popularity among aspirants. In this article, we will explore everything you need to know about the PTE score chart.

What is the Pearson Test of English?

The PTE, or the Pearson Test of English, is a computer-based standardized language proficiency test that is curated to test the proficiency of a candidate in International English. This test generally lasts 120 minutes and is taken in a single sitting. One of the most important reasons that more and more international students and academic organizations are beginning to prefer PTE is its unique score chart. The PTE score chart offers extremely valuable insights into the language proficiency of the student. It offers a thorough evaluation of particular language skills that have been tested in each part of the test.

What is a PTE score report?

The PTE score report is a summary of the results that international students obtain after they appear for the Pearson Test of English. It contains a comprehensive summary of the different abilities tested on the test. Generally, international students obtain their PTE score test report within two days of appearing for the test.

What is included in the PTE score report?

The PTE score report contains two distinct kinds of scoring:

• Overall score:

The overall score ranges between 10 and 90 points. It showcases the general English language proficiency level of international students throughout the test.

• Communicative skills scores:

The communicative skills scores are presented in four primary areas, namely listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Along with these scores, a detailed summary of the language abilities of the candidate is also presented.

What are the different sections of the PTE test?

Here are the various sections that are tested on the Pearson Test of English:

 Speaking:

The speaking section focuses on vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and fluency in spoken English. The score report also includes additional metrics on the speaking section, such as pronunciation and fluency range.

  Writing:

The writing section focuses on coherence, vocabulary, accuracy, and grammar in written English. The score report also includes feedback and a score on particular areas of written English, such as sentence framing and grammar.

  Reading:

The reading section focuses on the comprehension of diverse types of text, such as everyday materials and academic articles. The score report also includes information about their capacity to manage complicated texts and comprehend their meaning.

  Listening:

The listening section focuses on testing the ability of the candidate to understand spoken English in various contexts, such as conversations and lectures. The score report also includes details about the ability of the candidate to comprehend different speaking styles and accents.

What are the different score ranges in the PTE?

Here are the various score ranges based on the Pearson Test of English score chart:

PTE Score CEFR Level Focus on Skill Assessment

  •       At a PTE test score of 85-90, the CEFR level is considered to be C2. This stands for an advanced level of fluency and command over various communication skills. It also represents an outstanding expression and understanding of the language.
  •       A PTE test score between 76 and 84 represents the C1 CEFR level. The C1 CEFR level represents a high level of fluency. It denotes consistent complexity and accuracy during the use of language.
  •       At a PTE test score of 59-75, the CEFR level is considered to be B2. This stands for very good fluency and proficiency overall in diverse communication skills. It also represents effective and confident professional and academic communication.
  •       Students who obtain a PTE test score between 43 and 58 are expected to have good fluency. The score denotes a substantial command over different communication skills. International students who score in this band in the PTE are generally understood to be able to manage professional and academic situations. However, they may sometimes be faced with a challenge.
  •       A PTE test score between 30 and 42 represents the A2 CEFR level. The A2 CEFR level represents a moderate level of fluency. It conveys that international students possess a developing command of different communication skills. However, they may go through some challenges when managing complicated professional or academic contexts.
  •       A PTE test score between 10 and 29 denotes that the students are expected to have low fluency in the English language. The score suggests a basic understanding of the language. However, international students may require considerable improvement in their communication skills.

Conclusion

The scoring system of the PTE is logical and transparent. International students can gain a significant edge after understanding the calculation method and point distribution. It is crucial for international students to keep in mind that in order to obtain a high PTE score, they cannot completely rely on vocabulary lists and remember grammar rules. The Pearson Test of English tests the abilities of international students to communicate efficiently in real-world and academic situations. To prepare for this test, international students must focus on developing confidence and fluency.
