While Canada is a top country to live and work in due to its strong economy, high life quality and efficient healthcare, the shortage of IT workforce in the nation has given a great opportunity to tech professionals looking for lucrative jobs abroad.

Great news for tech professionals like web developers!

According to the Job Bank, which is Canada’s national employment service, there will be around 44,300 new job opportunities for software engineers and designers between 2022 and 2031. At the same time, about 48,800 people, like those finishing school, immigrants, and those looking for new job opportunities, are expected to be ready to take up these roles. The shortage of workers in recent years is expected to continue until 2031.

Here we will learn how you can move to Canada as a web developer. Let’s get started!

Step 1: Assess Your Eligibility

First thing first, make sure to determine your eligibility for PR.

If you choose to immigrate through Express Entry, you will be assessed based on your age, work experience, education and more.

Here is a breakdown of eligibility criteria for web developers or any other professional looking to work in Canada.

    • Age: Candidates are given points according to their age, with younger candidates typically receiving more points.

    • Education: You can gain important points by having a higher education degree, especially in a relevant field like computer science. Make sure an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) is used to evaluate your foreign education qualifications.

    • Work expertise: You may be able to receive extra points if you have several years of expertise in a skilled field, such as web development.

    • Language Proficiency: It is essential to be proficient in either French or English. To prove your language proficiency, take a test like the TEF for French or the IELTS for English.

    • Arranged Employment: You could receive bonus points if you have a legitimate work offer from a Canadian business. Keep in mind that a Labor Market Impact Assessment is usually required to support a job offer (LMIA).

    • Adaptability: To improve your Express Entry score, you can receive extra points for things like having a close relative living in Canada, having worked or studied there in the past, or having a job offer there.

Step 2: Showcase Language Proficiency

Facilitating your move to Canada as a web developer is contingent on demonstrating proficiency in English or French. As part of this process, web developers are required to take either the IELTS test for English or the TEF for French.

Aim for a higher score that corresponds with the points required by the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) to receive an invitation to apply (ITA).

This linguistic prowess not only aids your immigration journey but also enhances your prospects in the competitive IT job market in Canada.

Step 3: Get Your ECA Done:

An Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) is like a check to make sure that your foreign degree, diploma, or certificate is real and is considered just as good as one from Canada. There are different kinds of ECAs. You have to get one specifically for immigration reasons. If you already have a different kind of ECA, you might be able to get it changed to the right one, depending on the type and where it came from.

Make sure to put your ECA report and the reference number in your Express Entry profile. That way, the Canadian authorities can see that your education is up to their standards.

Step 4: Create Express Entry Profile:

Now, make an online profile on Express Entry. Put in the right details about your education, work experience, skills, and how well you speak languages.

The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) will be used by the system to assign a score to your profile. Your chances of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA) increase with your score.

Step 5: Opt for PNPs:

If you can get a nomination from a province (Provincial Nominee Programs or PNPs), it will help your chances. This boosts your score, making it more likely to get an Invitation to Apply (ITA). There are specific PNPs just for tech professionals, and some provinces have special programs for skilled tech workers. For example, there’s the BC PNP Tech Pilot, The Ontario Tech Pilot, and The Alberta Accelerated Tech Pathway.

Step 6: Search for Job:

While obtaining a job offer from a Canadian employer isn’t obligatory, it can significantly enhance your chances of receiving an invitation. Initiate your search for job opportunities using online platforms such as LinkedIn or Job Bank. Connect with professionals in the Canadian tech industry within your field. You might be pleasantly surprised to find that networking can lead to additional points and, potentially, a job offer.

Step 7: Submit the PR Application:

After completing your application and assembling all necessary documents, proceed to submit them to the immigration authorities. Your profile will undergo a thorough review, and the documents will be verified. If everything meets the requirements, you may receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA).

Step 8: Undergo Medical Examination and Obtain Police Clearance

In the final stages, undergo a medical examination and secure police clearance certificates.

These records are essential for verifying your integrity and general well-being.

After being approved, schedule your move to Canada throughout the ninety days. Make sure you have all the necessary paperwork, such as your COPR (Confirmation of Permanent Residence).

Learn how to do things like get a social security number (SIN), create a bank account, and look into housing alternatives.
